About the event

Just as the aim of Medicine in the 20th century was to cure patients, the aim of Medicine in the 21st century is, above all, to help people remain as healthy as possible by boosting their immune system, delaying or even partially inverting aging, reducing mortality and prolonging life.

More than an aim, it is the responsibility of all healthcare professionals who work directly or indirectly with the individual who seeks to constantly improve him or herself, in an effort to remain “young and healthy”, to help them “grow younger while growing old”.
We invite all healthcare professionals, the general public and stakeholders to participate in the 1st International Healthy Aging Summit 2019.

  • Day 1

    29th March 2019

  • Hélder Bruno Martins Composer, Pianist and Musicologist

  • In September 2015, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that 53% of Americans suffered from diabetes or prediabetes due to insulin resistance.

Cardiometabolic diseases include heart diseases, cancer, Alzheimer’s, obesity, diabetes and autoimmune disease. Insulin resistance stands out as the main cause of premature aging, as well as of most diseases of modern civilization. It is considered the global epidemic of the 21st century and I consider it responsible for 80% of human mortality.

  • Inflammation plays a key role in both health – through its physiological activity – and disease – through its pathological activity. In this presentation, we will decode its pathological role and talk about the changes in lifestyle that are essential in order to prevent or reduce its detrimental onset.

  • The greatest journey we can embark on is an inner journey, through diet or emotion.

In this brief presentation, I will talk about the deepest dive into our inner selves, using tools such as music therapy, secondary foods (which we ingest on a daily basis) and primary food… The type of food that is nourishing but is not served on a plate, and how we can change a prognosis of supposedly irreversible diseases in a short time span.

  • “Endocrine disruptors and hormonal imbalance: their dangers and how to avoid them.”

There is increasing evidence that countless chemicals – known as “endocrine disruptors” - can interfere with our endocrine system.

These chemicals are found in many products we use every day (food, plastic, aluminium packaging, cleaning products and personal hygiene products).

These environmental toxins may favour the onset of different types of cancer, interfere with the metabolism of glucose and cholesterol, induce insulin resistance and promote obesity.

Triggers such as inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage and thyroid function disruption are only a few of the negative side effects.

Our body and our hormones are prone to imbalances caused by coming into contact with over 200 toxic substances daily. Understanding this becomes key in being able to develop a medical approach that focuses on prevention and intervention, in terms of the general health of the population, in order to reduce the impact of these endocrine disruptors.

  • How to adjust physical exercise to biometric parameters, including anatomical, chronotropic and biochemical elements.

An individual’s hormonal, metabolic and nutritional condition may and should be taken into account when adjusting intensity, duration and type of physical exercise, as well as the best time of day to work out.

  • In the 19th century, the Russian biologist Ilya Mechnikov, awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physiology, said: “Death starts in the colon.” Since his discoveries, scientific research has increasingly supported the belief that 90% of human diseases derive from lack of digestive health.

The gut affects the immune system (70% of our immunity is located in the gut), our ability to eliminate toxins, to control inflammation, to produce neurotransmitters (95% of serotonin is produced by the enteric nervous system) and vitamins and to absorb nutrients. A faulty digestive system will lead to an increase in its permeability – leaky gut – which in turn results in increased toxicity, which is at the core of many neurological, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

Therefore, it is essential to reduce toxic waste as much as possible. Colon hydrotherapy is the best process for this purpose. It consists of the therapeutic cleansing of excrement, waste and toxic mucus that accumulate in the large intestine using purified ozone water. Following treatment, the intestinal flora changes.

  • Advanced supplementation ensures biochemical balance, the control of levels of inflammation and the ability of our immune system to react in an intelligent and efficient manner.

In order for healthy aging to occur, it is crucial that we respect ideal levels of essential nutrients, defined according to the genetic make-up of the individual, as well as any imbalance in immune reactions.

Studies in epigenetics and of the immune system are instrumental in making a personalized needs-analysis, thus allowing the regulation of the immune system, which determines our health. Correcting altered immune pathway activity helps the immune system to recover its ability to coordinate, self-regulate and adjust. Thus, supplementation contributes to the optimal functioning of the immune system, to the well-being of the body and it plays a fundamental role in therapeutic strategy. The presentation of clinical cases will help to raise awareness of this issue.

  • We are in search of a more efficient medical approach focused on neutralizing the causes of diseases, not just on reducing symptoms. Therefore, we must understand the physiopathological mechanisms of each disease. We must study the genetic, epigenetic and behavioural characteristics of each patient, who should be seen as a unique individual, since physiopathological mechanisms depend on those elements.

The identification of genetic polymorphism in the way autoimmune patients metabolize vitamin D has offered a unique glimpse into understanding the physiopathological mechanisms involved in these diseases. Effective treatments were developed in the last 16 years. During this time, the therapeutic use of high doses of vitamin D, together with measures to prevent toxic build-up, has been gradually refined, thus allowing tens of thousands of patients in several countries to return to their normal lives.

As this protocol was perfected, the importance of controlling emotional stress to ensure therapeutic success became evident, thus identifying the epigenetic mechanisms which are activated in autoimmune disorders. Polymorphic genes (which play a determining role in resistance to the activation immunotherapy of vitamin D), which often remain inactive, through, for example, epigenetic methylation, become active, leading to autoimmune disorders.

At the 1st International Healthy Aging Summit (March 2019 in Estoril, Portugal), we will show how understanding the interaction between epigenetic and biochemical mechanisms (while simultaneously administering appropriate doses of other substances, such as magnesium and riboflavin) has optimized the effectiveness of this particular therapy, with clear implications for public health. We will look at the treatment of autism, whose autoimmune mechanisms have been increasingly accepted.

  • I will be sharing cases of patients suffering from autoimmune diseases.

The treatment I will be presenting includes the use of high doses of vitamin D in the treatment of autoimmune pathologies or diseases, also known as the “Coimbra protocol”, the brainchild and work of Professor Cicero Galli Coimbra.

  • Ozone has been used in Medicine for therapeutic purposes since the beginning of the 20th century when it was applied on wounds for the first time (Wolf, 1915).

Since the invention of the first generator (Dr. Joachim Hansler, 1958) up until today, the scientific community has had a growing interest in studying the therapeutic properties of ozone. This has led to the development of various techniques, which have contributed significantly to improved health.

  • Biofeedback is a technique which consists of evaluating and balancing the individual as a whole. It is an integrated analysis of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual state the person is in. We know that these four elements work together and interact. Thus, any mental, emotional or spiritual change impacts the physical condition, and vice versa.

It is a technology that helps people return to their natural state, namely a state of health and balance.

  • When we speak of healthy aging, we aim to understand the body as a whole and to practice Medicine in order to keep the body balanced, or in homeostasis.

Biological and Integrative Medicine is defined by its respect for the body as a whole. It acts on a deeper level, seeking to identify and treat disease, its underlying cause in particular, as opposed to acting solely on the symptoms.

In Biological Medicine, the concept of disruptive foci is central. Teeth are valuable organs, just like the microbiological, occlusal and periodontal conditions of the mouth, and they are the most common disruptive foci in the body, capable of affecting its proper functioning.

The vast majority of chronic diseases are in some way related to dental infections. If these are not identified and eliminated, the treatment of those chronic conditions, such as autoimmune diseases, will not succeed.

  • During the aging process, different physiologic alterations occur that have an impact in the quality of life. Symptoms such as tiredness, fatigue, lack of strength and pain that limits the movement are common at this stage and may be related to nutritional deficiencies. Establishing daily routines, like physical exercise, ensuring an adequate supply of nutrients adapted to individual needs and maintaining healthy sleep habits are very important to ensure a good quality of life. Thinking on these moments Nestlé Health Science developed a range of nutritional solutions formulated with specific nutrients tailored to each aging stage to ensure that people stay active and enjoy a healthier aging.
